Scheduling a time to meet at the opulent lobby clock has always been a part of the legacy of staying at Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, especially when staying at Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel. We sat down with the head concierge for his recommendations on how to maximize your time in the Eternal City.
What is the most beautiful time of the year to experience Rome?
That’s not an easy question. I would say that every season has its own unique charm. The beginning of the year, from January to February, is a quieter time and allows you to enjoy neighborhoods and landmarks that during the busier months are flooded with tourists. By April you can start to soak in the warmer sun and smell the wisteria that hugs the walls of the popular Trastevere neighborhood.
In August, the hottest month by far, the best spot to be after a day of sightseeing is our outdoor pool. The still-warm autumn days that last well into November allow you to sit outside in one of the many piazzas of Rome and people-watch while sipping your glass of wine or a Negroni. You can end the year with Christmas celebrations at the Vatican and the lights of Via del Corso in the city center’s main shopping strips.
How do you recommend guests maximize their time?
I always tell guests not to plan too much in one day. Rome should be fully enjoyed. So I suggest a landmark visit in the morning, a typical Roman trattoria or pizzeria for lunch, and then some shopping in the afternoon. Finally, head back and relax a bit before dinner, poolside or around town.
What other tips do you have for guests to make the most of their stay?
You need at least three days in Rome to see some of the highlights, such as the Vatican, Colosseum and Roman Forum. You can mix those sites in with visits to Galleria Borghese (statues by Bernini), the National Museum for Ancient Roman Art at Palazzo Massimo and the Maxxi Museum (museum of modern architecture). Enjoy some of our luxury experiences to exclusive private palaces such as Galleria Colonna, one of the greatest Baroque palaces in the city.
For those interested in learning Italian craftsmanship, our sandal-making experience allows you to create your own pair of sandals with assistance from Italian artisans. And, if you have a few extra days, there are plenty of fascinating daily excursions into areas as far north as Florence and as far south as Naples, many of which can be enjoyed through our regional experiences.
